In 1993, Greg Mortenson failed to climb K2. After he became separated from his porter, he arrived exhausted and underweight at the poor village of Korphe in the Baltistan area of northern Pakistan. The village cared for Mortenson and when he recuperated, he promised to return and build the village’s first school. That project led to the creation of the Central Asia Institute and Mortenson went on to build over 50 schools across Pakistan and Afghanistan. This amazing story is told in Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace–One School at at Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.
