Familiar Face on the Field November 26, 2007
If you were watching yesterday’s thrilling San Francisco 49ers overtime victory over the Arizona Cardinals, the player who scored the game-winning touchdown may have been a familiar name to local football fans.
#95 Tully-Banta Cain, is the 49ers linebacker who recovered a fumble in the end zone during overtime to secure a 37-31 victory on Sunday, November 25, in Arizona. Tully grew up in Sunnyvale and attended Hollenbeck Elementary and Sunnyvale Middle Schools before becoming a multi-sport star at Fremont High.
After graduating from Fremont, Tully played football at Cal and was drafted by the New England Patriots in the seventh round in 2003. With the Pats, he earned two Super Bowl rings, in Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXIX. He joined the 49ers earlier this year as an unrestricted free agent.
Local sports historians will be interested to know that the Library maintains archives of local newspapers from Tully’s years playing football locally. The Library also recently acquired a number of past Fremont High yearbooks, which are being processed and should be available to view in the Sunnyvale Collection soon. Photo buffs will also want to take a look at the Library’s new AP Images database, where you can view incredible photos from the Associated Press, like the one displayed above. Access to the database is available within the library now and will be available remotely very soon.
You can read Tully’s biography on Wikipedia or check out his player profile from the San Francisco 49ers website.
